Cosmelan® Depigmentation Treatment: Results and Aftercare
Cosmelan® is designed to target stubborn pigmentation and help manage excess pigment production.
Best for:
Cosmelan® Depigmentation Treatment
Pigmentation can be frustrating.
You may be using good skincare, wearing sunscreen and taking care of your skin, yet darker patches or uneven areas can still keep coming back.
That is particularly common with concerns such as melasma, sun-related pigmentation and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
Cosmelan® is one treatment MJ may recommend when pigmentation needs a more structured approach.
It combines an in-clinic depigmentation treatment with a carefully managed home-care program. The aim is not simply to improve the pigmentation you can already see. The Cosmelan® system is also designed to help manage the processes involved in excess pigment production.
The important part is choosing the right treatment for your skin.
Before recommending Cosmelan®, MJ will assess your pigmentation, skin type, sensitivity, skincare routine and relevant medical history. Your treatment and aftercare can then be tailored around what your skin actually needs.
What Is Cosmelan®?
Cosmelan® is a professional depigmentation treatment designed to improve the appearance of uneven skin tone and stubborn pigmentation.
It may be considered for concerns such as melasma, sun damage, age spots, post-acne marks and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
The treatment works by targeting several stages involved in excess pigmentation.
One of these involves tyrosinase, an enzyme that plays a role in the production of melanin.
Melanin is the pigment that gives your skin its colour. Problems can occur when your skin begins producing or distributing pigment unevenly.
This may be influenced by sun exposure, hormones, heat, inflammation, acne or previous skin injury.
Cosmelan® is designed to help reduce visible pigmentation while supporting better control of ongoing pigment production.
Is Cosmelan® Suitable for Your Pigmentation?
Not every brown mark behaves in the same way.
That is why MJ will first look at what type of pigmentation you have rather than simply treating the colour you can see.
Melasma, for example, commonly appears as irregular brown or grey-brown patches across areas such as the cheeks, forehead or upper lip. It can be influenced by hormones, sun exposure, heat and genetics and may return even after improvement.
Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation is different. It develops after inflammation or injury to your skin. Acne, picking, irritation, waxing and some cosmetic treatments can all leave areas of darker pigmentation behind.
Sun spots and age spots are more closely associated with cumulative sun exposure.
Because these conditions have different triggers, your treatment plan needs to reflect the cause of your pigmentation as well as its appearance.
What Happens During a Cosmelan® Treatment?
Your Cosmelan® program begins with a consultation and skin assessment with MJ.
This is an important part of the treatment.
MJ will review your pigmentation, current skincare, previous treatments and any factors that could affect how your skin responds.
You may also need to adjust certain active skincare products before treatment.
Your In-Clinic Cosmelan® Treatment
During your appointment, the professional Cosmelan® depigmenting mask is applied to your skin.
The length of time the mask stays on depends on your skin and the treatment protocol MJ selects for you.
In many cases, you will leave the clinic with the mask still on and remove it at home at the time MJ has given you.
You will receive clear instructions so you know exactly what to do.
Your Home-Care Program
The treatment does not finish when the mask comes off.
Your home-care program is a major part of the Cosmelan® process.
Cosmelan® 2 is generally used during this stage according to the schedule MJ recommends for your skin.
Consistency matters.
Pigmentation can be influenced by ongoing factors such as sun exposure, inflammation and hormones. Following your home-care instructions gives your skin the best opportunity to respond to the treatment while helping you manage pigmentation over the longer term.
What Will Your Skin Feel Like Afterwards?
Cosmelan® can cause a noticeable skin response.
During the first few days, your skin may feel warm, tight, dry or sensitive.
Redness, flaking, peeling, mild swelling or stinging can also occur.
For many people, the most visible part of the recovery period lasts around five to seven days, although your experience may be shorter or longer.
MJ will explain what is expected for your skin and what would warrant contacting the clinic.
Try not to compare your recovery with someone else's. Skin sensitivity and treatment response can vary considerably between people.
When Will You See Cosmelan® Results?
Cosmelan® is not an overnight treatment.
Some people notice that their skin begins looking brighter and more even during the first few weeks.
Pigmentation may continue improving over the following weeks and months as you progress through your treatment and maintenance program.
Your results will depend on your pigmentation type, skin response, hormones, sun exposure and how consistently you follow your prescribed home care.
MJ will review your progress and can adjust your skincare or maintenance plan where needed.
Results cannot be guaranteed, and pigmentation can return. For this reason, ongoing management is often just as important as the initial treatment.
Cosmelan® Aftercare
Aftercare is one of the most important parts of your treatment.
Your skin barrier may be more sensitive during the early recovery period, so this is not the time to add extra active products or try to speed up peeling.
Use the skincare MJ recommends and allow your skin to recover naturally.
You will generally need to be careful with direct sun exposure, excessive heat, strenuous exercise and treatments that could irritate your skin.
Avoid picking or pulling at peeling skin.
You may also need to temporarily stop exfoliating products, retinoids, waxing, skin needling, peels, laser treatments or other resurfacing procedures.
MJ will tell you when it is appropriate to restart them.
Daily broad-spectrum sunscreen is particularly important. UV exposure can stimulate pigmentation and undermine the progress you are trying to make.
How Should You Prepare for Cosmelan®?
Your preparation will depend on what you are currently using on your skin.
MJ may ask you to temporarily stop retinol, vitamin A products, acids, exfoliants or other potentially irritating products before your appointment.
Tell MJ about any prescription medicines, recent cosmetic treatments, allergies or medical conditions that could affect your treatment.
You should also mention if you are prone to cold sores.
Do not stop prescription medication unless the healthcare professional who prescribed it has told you to do so.
Who May Not Be Suitable for Cosmelan®?
Cosmelan® is not appropriate for everyone.
Treatment may need to be delayed or avoided if your skin is actively irritated, infected, sunburnt or injured.
Pregnancy, breastfeeding, allergies, certain medications, medical conditions and recent skin procedures may also affect whether treatment is appropriate.
This is why your consultation with MJ matters.
Rather than using the same protocol for every patient, your suitability should be assessed individually.
Is Cosmelan® Suitable for Darker Skin Tones?
Cosmelan® can be considered across a wide range of skin tones and Fitzpatrick skin types.
However, having a treatment that can be used on different skin tones does not mean every treatment plan should be identical.
MJ will assess your skin carefully and determine whether Cosmelan® is appropriate for your pigmentation and how your treatment should be managed.
How Many Cosmelan® Treatments Will You Need?
Many Cosmelan® programs begin with one professional application followed by an extended home-care and maintenance program.
Whether you need further professional treatment depends on your pigmentation, your response and your longer-term goals.
MJ can assess this as your skin progresses.
How Long Do Cosmelan® Results Last?
Results can be long-lasting, but pigmentation is rarely something we can simply treat once and forget.
Sun exposure, hormones, heat and inflammation can continue to influence pigment production.
Good skincare, consistent sun protection and the maintenance plan MJ gives you can all help protect your result.
How Much Does Cosmelan® Cost?
Cosmelan® treatment is customised to your skin, so we do not advertise a set price online.
The products, treatment approach and aftercare MJ recommends will depend on your skin type, the type of pigmentation you have and your individual treatment needs.
The best place to start is with a consultation. MJ can assess your skin, talk you through the most suitable treatment plan and explain exactly what is included in your personalised Cosmelan® package.
Is Cosmelan® Right for Your Skin?
If you are dealing with melasma, sun damage, post-acne pigmentation or uneven skin tone, Cosmelan® may be worth considering.
But the most important first step is understanding why your pigmentation is there.
MJ will assess your skin, discuss what has been happening with your pigmentation and explain whether Cosmelan® is likely to be an appropriate option for you.
From there, you can have a treatment, home-care and maintenance plan built around your skin rather than following a one-size-fits-all protocol.
