Acne is a common, long-lasting disorder. It affects the hair follicle and sebaceous gland. In it, the follicle expands and gets blocked. This causes inflammation. And, there are many types.

Acne is due to a combination of factors, and exact mechanisms are not fully understood. Flare–ups of acne can be provoked by many different factors.

Generally, we can divide them into two categories: non–inflammatory and inflammatory acne. In both types, a comedo is the primary lesion. A comedo is a plugged follicular orifice. It can later develop into other types of acne. The former is comedonal acne, which means blackheads and whiteheads. The latter is pustules, which are typical "pimples" filled with pus, and cysts.

If we split acne into categories, we see that each should be treated differently.

Blackheads & Whiteheads

Blackheads differ from whiteheads. They differ because they are exposed to free air. In blackheads, dead skin cells and melanin easily get oxidised. This gives them a darker colour.

Pimples (Pustules)

Pustules are the stereotypical pimple. They are bulging sores filled with pus. They often have a red halo. They tend to be painful and, compared to blackheads & whiteheads, they can leave scars.

Nodulocystic acne

Nodulocystic acne breakouts are painful, and they often leave scarring. Nodular acne also involves bacteria called p. acne. It's normal to have this type of bacteria on your skin. But, it can turn into an infection when it gets trapped in your pores with sebum and dead skin cells.

The infection can go deep under your skin. It makes the affected pores red and swollen. Because it causes issues deep within the skin, nodular acne is considered a more severe form of acne. Acne nodules are unlike other types of acne, like blackheads. They cannot be cleared up with over–the–counter products alone.
